Why bother?
New media is an exceptionally useful learning tool because the work produced isn't just going to be seen by the teacher, but also by classmates and anyone who chooses to see it online (blogs can also be password protected so only the school community can view them).
Having an audience provides an extra incentive to produce quality work and the editing process gives students much stronger incentives to work as part of a team, and to review and correct their work as they go through the editing process.
What might a new media project look like?
You can use any of the following methods or use a combination of the three. If you're not entirely sure how you'd use new media in your insitution, we can work with you on how to effectively blend it into your curriculum.
Blogging
A blog is essentially a simple website. They're mainly used to present are incredibly versatile in terms of the ways they can be used to deliver text, audio and video. The great things about blogs is that they're incredibly user-friendly, so the author can focus less on learning about HTML code and spend more time on producing quality content.
Along with helping you on the technical side, we can also provide additional modules on internet safety, online marketing, using images and online journalism skills.
Film/Vodcasting
Learning's more fun when you're hitting all the senses, which is why students and teachers love working with film. Whether it's a documentary, a news report or a dramatic production you're shooting,
Podcasting
A podcast is essentially an online radio show that the user can listen to on any computer, MP3 player or mobile phone. Podcasts are exceptionally easy and a lot of fun to create.
Most podcasting software packages come with a wide range of music intros and sound effects, so in no time at all students are able to create news reports, documentaries and music shows - and publish them online.
Would we need to invest in new equipment?
If your school/college/university has decided to commit itself to developing new media, we can acquire products and software with significant discounts on list prices.
In most cases, there is no need to invest in new equipment, as most institutions have access to computers and video camera. With podcasting, certain types of software are required and we can guide you in making the right decision.
